Bill Godin and Leroy Wilson win the 2013 KBI Tournament

By Luigi De Rose

KBI crowned a new championship team! Bill Godin and Leroy Wilson’s three-day limit of 52.50lbs allowed them to leap into the lead and claim the crown. Powered by a day 3 catch of 18.60lbs, the heaviest of the day, was enough to hold off Brain McNanney and Matthew Rydberg who amassed 51.52lbs for second. The hometown super star team of Jeff “Gussy” Gustafson and Chris Savage who lead the tournament for the first two days faltered and fell to 9th place.

2013 KBI Day 2: Chris Savage and Jeff Gustafson Keep Lead. We Remain Consistent.

By Luigi De Rose

Day 2 at the KBI and we moved up a few places. Some how got the exact weight as yesterday. This time 5 smallmouth totaled 9.37lbs. Yesterday we only had 4 bass. We are still dismally down near the bottom.

The weather is said to be warming and more sun.  Not sure what to expect. I have been here for 9 days and the weather has not been the same once! I wish we could replay last Tuesday’s practice day. We could have had 17lb without even trying. This adventure will be coming to life in more detail in the pages of Ontario OUT OF DOORS magazine as a travel piece in 2014.

KBI is a very well run event and the whole town supports the anglers.  A huge change from the tournaments that I normally fish. Those one day events are hit and run. Here, the tournament brings more friendship. I keep running into great bass anglers and old friends. While gassing up the boat this evening we ran into Ontario OUT OF DOORS Editor Bruce Ranta and promptly invited him for dinner. What a special situation. He is super and I really enjoy his company. Bruce, a recently retired biologist for this district, says that Lake of the Woods is nasty after a cold front. Hot weather usually brings out the best in this lake. Well, it doesn’t look like it will be warming up too soon.

Take care.
