Chad Grigsby Wins 2018 FLW Tour Lake St. Clair with 97-08lbs!

FLW PRESS RELEASE

After the day-three weigh-in at the FLW Tour event presented by Mercury on Lake St. Clair, then-leader Dylan Hays said whoever cracked 25 pounds between he, Chad Grigsby and Brad Knight would win. He was right.
With all three fishing within earshot of one another, it was Grigsby who got to whoop it up the most today. He caught a 6-pounder early and never looked back, bringing in 26 pounds, 4 ounces to nearly crack the century mark on smallies and win the final FLW Tour stop of the 2018 season.
“This is awesome,” says Grigsby, who caught 97 pounds, 8 ounces total for his second Tour victory. “Winning the first one was great, but this one … I mean, you had to catch ’em every day this event. Fortunately, I just had a very special spot, and I had it all to myself.”
That spot was a 1/8-mile stretch on the southern Canadian side of St. Clair. It wasn’t far from where Hays and Knight were sharing a spot, but having this particular spot to himself was what Grigsby feels made a huge difference in being able to pull out the win.
While the spot didn’t seem like anything too different – an area with water 16 to 19 feet deep with a mixture of sand and patches of grass – what made it special was just how much bait was in there. Today, especially, Grigsby says when he pulled up he immediately noticed even more bait than had been in there all week.
“I saw that and knew something special was going to happen,” Grigsby recalls.
Just as in the previous days, Grigsby had to adjust to figure out what the fish wanted to eat. Willingness to adjust daily was the biggest reason for his victory.
On day one, he was catching some fish, but when the lake slicked off he picked up a Duo Realis Spinbait 80 spy bait – something he hadn’t thrown even in practice – and cracked his tournament-leading 25-13 bag.
The next day they wouldn’t eat the spy bait, and it was a switch to a 1/4-ounce black marabou jig that produced two big bites en route to maintaining his lead with 24-4. The spy bait was the deal again on day three, though Grigsby didn’t execute as well and lost a few fish that resulted in a 21-3 catch, which gave Hays an opening to slide into the lead.
Grigsby knew that if he could execute better with the spy bait his weight would skyrocket back up on the final day, and he proved himself right. While he started catching them on a Venom tube, he mixed in the spy bait, which produced most of his bigger bites.
“I really feel I stayed one step ahead of them all week,” Grigsby says. “Sometimes I’d go 45 minutes without a bite, and then I’d switch things up, adjust and start catching them again. I just had to keep making adjustments.”
The Minnesota pro grew up in Michigan and spent the first 25-plus years of his life fishing St. Clair, so Grigsby was confident he could win on the fishery. But he admits that confidence had wavered after the last few seasons.
“I’ve had to overcome a lot of my own demons,” Grigsby says. “I’ve had such a bad last two years I didn’t even feel comfortable fishing anymore. I had no confidence.
“Coming back to the Tour, especially these last four events, I finally feel relaxed, comfortable and confident in my abilities as an angler. And now winning here just blows everything out of the water.”

2018 FLW Tour Lake St. Clair Day 3: Dylan Hays Vaults into Lead with 72-03lbs!

FLW PRESS RELEASE

Lake St. Clair is a massive body of water, yet it seems one stretch along the southern Canadian side is where everyone’s focus will be on Sunday.
Dylan Hays, Chad Grigsby and Brad Knight are all fishing within sight of one another, with Hays and Knight essentially sharing the same area. In first, Hays put 22 pounds, 6 ounces in the boat to get up to a total of 72-3. Slipping slightly, Grigsby is just 15 ounces back in second. Busting 25-5, Knight moved up to third and is less than 2 pounds off the lead.
“Basically, one of us is going to bring in 24 to 25 pounds tomorrow between the three of us,” says Hays. “And whoever does is going to win.”
While the tournament set the two-day FLW record for most weight weighed in, there have been only four 24-plus-pound bags. All of them have been caught by the top three. Grigsby did it day one and day two. Hays also did it day two, bringing in the heaviest bag of the event at 26-7. Today it was Knight with 25-5.
Combined, the three have brought in 213 pounds, 13 ounces of fish from the area. If that isn’t ridiculous enough, all three say they haven’t laid into their best places as hard as they can, and all three say they’ve lost some giant fish that could have pushed their weights higher.
For now, Hays holds the lead, something the second-year pro has never done at an FLW Tour event. Yet, as excited as he is, day three was his worst day of the tournament thanks to losing some really big fish.
“The area has the quality to make up for losing big fish, but if I’m to win it I’ll have to keep them all buttoned up tomorrow,” Hays says. “I wish I had today, because it would’ve been nice to have more than a 15-ounce cushion.”

2016 Walmart FLW Kentucky Lake Day 1: Brad Knight Leads by Ounces Over Fukae

Knight Leads with 23-6
FLW PRESS RELEASE
Best start of the year for FLW Cup Champ
(FLW Photo)
Since winning the Forrest Wood Cup in August of 2015, Brad Knight’s 2016 follow-up Walmart FLW Tour season has not been what he had hoped, collecting just one check in the first four events. Today the Lancing, Tenn., resident took the first step in righting the ship with a five-bass limit weighing 23 pounds, 6 ounces for the day-one lead at the FLW Tour on Kentucky Lake presented by Mercury and hosted by the Kentucky Lake Convention and Visitors Bureau.
“Man, I’ve had enough of the bad this year,” Knight says. “It’s time to get this thing turned around and what better place to do it than on the Tennessee River.”
Knight’s limit was anchored by the day-one big bass, weighing in at 8 pounds, 9 ounces.

2016 Bassmaster Bass Pro Shop Southern Open #1 Day 2: Strader Soars with Hail Mary!

FLW and BASS top pros raising to top.
By John Neporadny Jr.
BASS PRESS RELEASE
Wesley Strader has moved into first place in the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Southern Open #1 with a game plan that seems to change by the hour.
Wesley grabs lead with 37-04 pounds over two locals.

“I just have been kind of winging it the whole time,” said Strader, who leads the pro division with 37 pounds, 4 ounces. “I seem to do better when I can wing it, just go fishing and not have any preconceived notions of what I am going to do.”
Thursday, Strader went to a spot where he expected to catch just keeper-size bass to complete his limit but the spot produced heavyweight bass for him.  Friday, the Spring City, Tenn., angler caught about a 10-pound limit from that spot and since he knew he had enough weight to make the Top 12 cut, Strader decided to try another place he found in practice.
After arriving at the new spot, Strader noticed his partner threw a “Hail Mary” out into the middle of the lake and caught a quality bass.  “So I threw out there and caught a big one,” he said.  “Then I threw out there and caught another big one.”  Strader thanked his partner for putting him on those couple of bites that helped him complete a 15-11 limit.
“I kind of figured something out there at the end of the day so maybe it will pay off tomorrow,” he said.  “It seems like the later in the day it gets the better the bite because Florida bass like it hot. So I could see as the water temperature got up to that 62 to 64 degrees the fish started getting a little more aggressive. “
Winter Springs Bassmasters club member Eric Panzironi celebrated his son Landen’s seventh birthday today by catching a 16-13 limit that moved him into second place with 34-4.  “It just all came together,” said the 36-year old swimming pool maintenance man.  “I found a spot that was holding fish and I caught a limit early and then got a couple of big bites."
“I went to the same exact spot (as yesterday) and I made about 10 casts and caught a decent one,” Panzironi said. “From there on I got a couple more. Then I caught a big one and that was pretty much it. I didn’t cull too much, maybe once or twice, but that was it.”
The Longwood, Fla., angler admits he had a terrible practice this week, but he has turned it around during the tournament. “I barely caught a limit on Monday and Tuesday,” he said.  His bite has been early as he has caught his limit by about 9:30 each morning.

Brad Knight Wins the 2015 Forrest L. Wood Cup Lake Ouachita!

Knight Slays Ouachita
by Rob Newell
FLW PRESS RELEASE

For the last decade, Brad Knight has had the same recurring dream at night. Although the dream has varying versions, scopes and backdrops, the theme is always the same: He is in contention to win a big bass tournament.
Sticking to his guns kept Brad in the same area the entire tournament.
(Photo: FLW)
“It’s not so much that I win the tournament or that I catch a big bass or anything like that,” he said Saturday afternoon. “It’s more that I’m in contention to win. I’m in a good position, I feel good about what I’m doing and I know exactly how I’m going to catch them. It’s not a nervousness but an anticipation – a good anticipation …”
And then he wakes up to his normal life as a part-time manager of Wartburg Pharmacy in Wartburg, Tenn., and all the intense feelings of anticipation are chased into the shadows by reality.
Knight again experienced that same dream on Saturday night. Except this time when he awoke, it was reality: He really was in contention to win a big tournament, the biggest of its kind – the 2015 Forrest Wood Cup.
“When I woke up, the first thing I said was, ‘If I’m dreaming, please don’t wake me up. I want to know how this ends,’” he added.
On Sunday afternoon, Knight stood before a packed house in the Bank of the Ozarks Arena in Hot Springs, Ark., hoisting a Forrest Wood Cup over his head. He now knows how his dream ends.

2015 Forrest L. Wood Cup Lake Ouachita Day 3: Wheeler Back on Top!

Unsettled day mixes leaderboard.
by Rob Newell
FLW PRESS RELEASE

The weather across the Ozarks was unstable and volatile today – much like the leaderboard on the third day of the Forrest Wood Cup presented by Walmart at Lake Ouachita.
First there was rain. Then sunshine. Then wind. Then another round of storms thrashed the top 20 pros just before check-in.
Jacob set to win his second Cup!
(Photo: FLW)
Names on the leaderboard swirled about as well. Weights were the lowest of the week, with Bryan Thrift checking in the day’s best weight of 14 pounds, 3 ounces for his biggest move of the tournament from 10th to fourth place. But some, like day-two leader Ramie Colson Jr., endured the dark clouds of not being able to complete a limit, which dropped him to third place.
By day’s end it was Jacob Wheeler who found the sunniest spot atop the leaderboard, regaining his first-place position from day one with a 14-pound limit, which gives him a three-day total of 41 pounds, 1 ounce and a scant 12-ounce lead over second-place pro Brad Knight.
Interestingly, as Wheeler and Knight battle it out on the final day, their strategies are very different. Wheeler is running a true pattern across the lake. Knight, however, is banking primarily on one area for the win.

2015 Forrest L. Wood Cup Lake Ouachita Day 2: Colson Takes Lead as Field Cut to 20!

Big bass key for leader
FLW PRESS RELEASE
At about 2:30 p.m. Friday afternoon, Ramie Colson Jr.’s life might have changed forever. It was at that point that Colson cast into a brush pile on Lake Ouachita, felt a tug, set the hook and battled to the boat a fish that weighed nearly 6 pounds.
Now, normally, catching a 6-pound bass is not that big of a deal, unless of course you are fishing the Forrest Wood Cup for $500,000 and the big bass anchors the biggest limit of the tournament, putting you in the lead.
Welcome to Ramie Colson's world.
“After I caught that bass, I had to drift over to the bank, Power-Pole down, and just sit down and take a drink of water for about 15 minutes,” Colson recalls. “And those thoughts start popping up in your mind … about possibly winning. I had to take a few minutes to sort of recompose myself and get focused again.”
For the record, Colson’s day-two limit weighed 17 pounds, 14 ounces, giving him a two-day total of 31 pounds, 1 ounce for nearly a 3-pound lead going into the third day of the Forrest Wood Cup presented by Walmart, which is hosted by Visit Hot Springs and the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism.
