Tom Monsoor’s game plan didn’t change, nor did his place in the standings. His mindset and optimism sure have, though.
Don’t be mistaken; Monsoor is excited to be leading after catching 15 pounds, 5 ounces on day three of the FLW Tour on the Potomac River presented by Costa Sunglasses. The long-time pro from La Crosse, Wis., has never won a Tour event, and after watching Bryan Schmitt win the last event on Monsoor’s home waters, he’d enjoy returning the favor.
That said, his once-sizable lead has dwindled to a mere 2 ounces over Brandon McMillan of Clewiston, Fla., in large part because a key part of his game plan failed him Saturday, and that has him concerned for tomorrow.
“The big bites just didn’t happen today,” says Monsoor. “I think my big-fish area might be done, and that’s bad.”

Monsoor has been running a two-area pattern based around the tides, and he did so again Saturday, starting on a 200-foot-long grass bed where every morning he’s sacked up a quick limit. That part held true again Saturday, as he switched between his notorious swim jig and a swimbait to catch roughly eight keepers, with two of them being good ones.
At 8:30 a.m. he pulled the plug to go to his big-fish area – a 100-yard grass bed just south of takeoff. For the next 6 hours Monsoor soaked his swim jig in that area, catching only four keepers. Two did cull him up a little, but it was far from what he’d come to expect from the area where he’d been able to make significant upgrades the first two days.
The lackluster bite confirmed what was his lone fear about the area: that it may have been beaten up too badly by fishing pressure the previous days.

It can never be easy at Beaver Lake. At least, that’s the track record for this lake over the course of its 20-year history as an FLW Tour destination. Beaver is notorious for its up-and-down fishing conditions, and the pros who’ve been lucky enough to lead at Beaver on day one frequently end up falling out of the cut on day two.

Today, day-one leader Cody Meyer thought he might experience the typical Beaver Lake flip-flop, but he was able to maintain his spot atop the standings in the FLW Tour presented by General Tire despite an overall drop in production. Meyer caught 16 pounds, 1 ounce on day one to lead by just 6 ounces over runner-up Chris Brasher. He followed up on day two with a 12-pound, 8-ounce limit and now has a 3-ounce lead over Texan Jason Reyes going into the weekend.

When it comes to bass fishing in the Southeast, August is a very mysterious month. Quality bass that were so plentiful in the spring and early summer seem to vanish during the dog days of summer with its simmering heat.

Similarly, when it comes to fishing the Tennessee River chain of lakes flowing through north Alabama, Wheeler Lake tends to be the most perplexing. It lacks the lush grass of Guntersville and the defined contours of Pickwick. That’s what makes the 2016 Forrest Wood Cup presented by Walmart at Wheeler such an intriguing event.

On a scorching day one of competition, several pros were able to decipher the mystery and put together big bags, but only one was able to step ahead of the pack. John Cox of DeBary, Fla., leads day one with 16 pounds, 11 ounces and has nearly a 2-pound advantage going into day two.

Those who follow the Walmart FLW Tour are likely familiar with Cox’s overall fishing strategy: Use an aluminum boat to get into the hardest places to reach and fish for shallow-dwelling bass that escape the fishing pressure of other more easily accessible areas. Cox has made his strategy pay off with two other FLW Tour wins, including the second stop of the 2016 regular season at Lake Hartwell. Cox is at it again this week on Wheeler, grinding the “tin” as far up a creek as he can get to access untapped water.

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Standard opinion among the anglers fishing the Bass Pro Shops Southern Open presented by Allstate was that the tournament couldn’t be won on Toho.

If you wanted big bass, Kissimmee was the place to fish.

Chad Morganthaler proved them wrong, spending all three days on the host lake and rallying from ninth place to win the season opener.

In a tournament laced with some of Florida’s top anglers, the Coulterville, Ill. veteran pro sneaked into the back door with a big sack on a day when the front runners struggled.

His last day catch of 22 pounds, 3 ounces was more than enough to carry him to the top and give him a 52-7 total.

Kissimmee expert Bobby Lane Jr., who had the second biggest bag of the day (14 pounds), finished second with 48-13 and Todd Auten of South Carolina was third with 48-1. Gerald Swindle of Alabama and second-day leader Brandon McMillian rounded out the top five.

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Florida’s fickle bass not only played with the heads with the first-round leaders in the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Southern Open presented by AllState, but they also scrambled the leaderboard.

Local favorite takes lead as bite dies.

On a day when the sun shined and the fish were supposed to bite, big bags were few and far between. That was just fine for Brandon McMillan of Clewiston, Fla, whose 13-pound, 15-ounce limit gave him a two-day total of 38-8, good enough to move him from third to first.
To illustrate how goofy fishing was Friday, New York’s Andrew Slegona – who caught 31 pounds to lead the event after the first day, only had two small bass Friday but fell no farther than fourth (34-9).
“Man, hard to believe that I could stay in the top five with a day like that on a lake like this,” Slegona marveled.
Meanwhile, Todd Auten of South Carolina jumped from 13th to second (36-8), Bobby Lane Jr. moved from 18th to third (34-13) and Gerald Swindle climbed from 17th to fifth (34-3). Only 4 pounds, 5 ounces separate the top five who will join seven other anglers in Saturday’s final.
In the co-angler division, Floridian Alan Agnoli stunned the crowd with three bass weighing 17-11 to take the lead with 24-15. Other Floridians in the top five include Steve Jarrett (18-2), Robbie Anderson (17-13), Terry Law (17-10) and Daniel Lanier (17-9).
