2018 Bassmaster Elite Lake Martin Day 1: Cliff Prince Scores Lead with 19-13lbs!

Two big bass score lead

BASS PRESS RELEASE

Conventional wisdom says one big bass per day will give you a good shot at winning a tournament on Lake Martin.

So, when Florida angler Cliff Prince caught a pair of giants on back-to-back casts Thursday, he needed a quick breather to collect himself.

One weighed 6 pounds, 11 ounces, the other weighed 6-3, and they propelled Prince to a leading first-day weight of 19-13 in the Bassmaster Elite at Lake Martin presented by Econo Lodge.

“Back-to-back casts — it was unbelievable,” Prince said. “I had to sit down for a minute because I definitely wasn’t expecting it.”

Like many of the competitors in this week’s 110-angler field, Prince has very little experience on Lake Martin — and the three official practice days prior to the tournament weren’t exactly kind to him.

But before 9 a.m. Thursday, he idled past a spot that he recognized as a potential big-fish haven.

“I didn’t fish that spot in practice,” said Prince, who was tightlipped about exactly where and how he caught his fish. “But I knew I had gotten bit on another stretch like that. I figured if I caught a big one, it would be down that stretch — and I caught two.”

Unlike Prince, who has fished just 85 tournaments with B.A.S.S. — and none on Lake Martin — the two anglers just behind him in the standings have extensive experience on the fishery.

Takahiro Omori, a Japanese angler who now resides in Texas, earned checks in Bassmaster Invitationals held on Martin in 2001 and 2002. He also won an FLW Tour event on Martin in 2001, earning a $100,000 first-place prize.

Omori caught 18-2 Thursday to land in second place.

“I never even pre-fished this time, so it’s been at least 15 years since I was here,” Omori said. “I didn’t fish any of the same stuff from back then.”

Buddy Gross Wins 2016 Walmart FLW Tour Pickwick Lake with 74-5lbs!

Wire to wire for rookie.
by Rob Newell
FLW PRESS RELEASE
There are no more secrets.
That phrase has become cliché in tournament bass fishing. And to a large degree, it’s true. With the advent of modern electronics, which feature mapping and imaging, every square foot of a lake bottom can be scoured, mapped and captured on an SD card.
But what grows on that mapped lake bottom can change and these days true bass fishing secrets tend to hide in the seams of environmental changes to waterways. For instance, consider how exotics like gobies and zebra mussels have changed fisheries in the Midwest.
Anglers who ply the same waters day after day, year after year are the first to notice these changes in ecosystems and how the changes begin to influence bass behavior. Once these anglers detect a change in how bass relate to the ecosystem, they discover approaches and tactics that give them huge advantages in tournaments.
Gross wins despite poor last day. (Photo: FLW)
One such angler who has seen just such a change along the TVA system in recent years is Walmart FLW Tour rookie Buddy Gross of Ringgold, Ga. Gross fishes Lake Guntersville quite a bit and over the last few years he has seen a change in Guntersville’s vegetation that can best be described with one word: Eelgrass.

20116 Walmart FLW Tour Pickwick Lake Day1: Gross Grabs Lead with 25 Pounds!

FLW PRESS RELEASE
The day one fishing at the Walmart FLW Tour event on Pickwick Lake presented by Quaker State and hosted by Florence/Lauderdale Tourism might best be described as windy, weird and wild.
Windy because a northwest wind of 15 to 20 mph with gusts to 28 mph throttled the field of anglers who were hoping to fish open water areas in the lake’s lower end. The wind blowing against the current stacked up sizeable rollers better suited for the ocean. The weigh-in line buzzed with stories of speared waves, wet clothes and damaged equipment.
Despite windy conditions several ledge guys did very well. (Photo: FLW)
Weird because in a very unfortunate turn of events, some 30 pros and co-anglers who locked up into Wilson Lake this morning were basically locked out of the lock in the afternoon due to a barge that had issues when locking through. Most of those anglers were penalized for being late and about 20 of them missed their check in times altogether and ended the day with a zero, despite catching some solid limits.

2016 BASS Elite Wheeler Lake Day 1: John Crews Grabs Lead with 20 Pounds!

Crews rockets into lead.
By Bryan Brasher
BASS PRESS RELEASE
By nature, fishermen can be storytellers, and the top-shelf professional anglers that make up the Bassmaster Elite Series are no exception. Before the tournament began, the vast majority of the 108-angler field claimed the three official practice days were very unproductive — if not downright difficult.
It's standard procedure for tournament anglers to hold their cards close to their chest, especially during the days leading up to official competition. However, practice was certainly difficult for some at the Academy Sports + Outdoors Bassmaster Elite at Wheeler Lake.
John Crews grabs lead as most struggle. (Photo: BASS)
Reality or a well-played bluff, all but eight anglers weighed five-fish limits of bass during the first round of competition on Wheeler. In all seriousness, effectively and consistently catching bass immediately following the spawn can be a difficult prospect as the fish are in need of recuperation. And, that is exactly what the anglers are faced with in in northwestern Alabama.

2015 Bassmaster Elite Lake Guntersville Day 3: Ike Keeps Leads as Leaderboard Flip-slops!

Ike  Struggles as Skeet Advances!
GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. – Michael Iaconelli’s ever-evolving game plan for the Diet Mtn Dew Bassmaster Elite at Lake Guntersville took another drastic turn during Saturday’s third round.
The New Jersey pro switched to a Carolina Rig – a technique he calls his “next-to-least-favorite way” to fish – and managed a five-bass limit that weighed 16 pounds, 7 ounces. It pushed his three-day total to 69-8 and kept him in the lead for the third straight day.
Iaconelli’s margin dwindled, however, dropping from nearly 5 pounds as the day began to just 2-2 entering Sunday’s championship round. California pro Skeet Reese caught 25-1 Saturday and jumped into second with 67-6, followed by Tennessean David Walker (67-4) and Oklahoma angler Jason Christie (65-7).
Just enough for IKE to keep lead. (Photo: BASS)
“My least-favorite way to catch fish is with a jiggin’ spoon,” Iaconelli said. “After that, it would be Carolina-rigging.  But if I had not pulled out that Carolina Rig, I probably would have only weighed in about 11 pounds today.”
Iaconelli worked the same area that produced catches of 28-2 and 24-15 the first two days. But the fishing was much tougher due to strong winds that made the lake choppy and eventually caused some areas to become stained with mud.
He said he’ll have to decide before take-off Sunday whether he’ll stick with the area that’s been so good to him or finally make a move.
“I still believe in my heart that the area I’m fishing is the winning area,” Iaconelli said. “It’s so hard to leave. My mind keeps thinking I just need to stay in there the entire day and commit. I’m going to go home and think about it tonight.”
Iaconelli did leave the area briefly Saturday to check out a spot where he had found several fish on spawning beds during practice. But after inspecting that area, he said he abandoned any thought of sight-fishing the rest of the way.
“I took it off the table,” Iaconelli said. “When I ran in there today, there were dudes on the bank everywhere. So I just decided I’m not bed fishing.”
Though it helped him hang onto the lead Saturday, Iaconelli said he believes another 16-pound catch Sunday will sink his chances for a wire-to-wire victory. He thinks it’ll take 20-plus pounds, possibly even mid-20s, to win.

Jeff "Gussy" Gustafson's Lives Out Every Angler's Dream

FLW Pro angler relives his monster bass and new found secrets from Pickwick Tournament

By Luigi De Rose

Shimano pro Gussy is all smiles
with this monster.
(Photo: FLW)
It’s been just over a week but Jeff “Gussy” Gustafson’s knees are still knocking. The second year FLW pro took the lead at the Walmart FLW Tour Pickwick Lake tournament at Florence, Alabama in grand fashion.   Not only was this his first opportunity to lead a national tournament, he anchored his limit with his personal best largemouth bass, a 10-12 monster. By the end of the tournament, Gussy slipped to 17th by netting 52-08 for the tournament. The drama of that first day will be vividly replayed in his mind and heart forever.

IBASSIN got a change to chat with the Shimano and G. Loomis pro as he re-lives that magical day.

DAY 1
“Day 1 was amazing but I didn’t start off exactly like I wanted.” Recalls Jeff. “ I was boat number 165 which was almost next to last to leave.” Knowing the post-spawn bass would be schooled in community holes, Jeff knew he wouldn’t have any privacy.  Gustafson was mentally prepared to fish in a crowd but knew it wasn’t what he wished to do.

Racing down the lake, he just passed spot after spot because they were already crowded. He finally stopped to fish at one of his spots that wasn’t crowded. This first spot yielded four keepers with ease but then the fishing slowed. After some dead time, he relocated to another shell bed.

Greg Hackney Wins the 2014 Walmart FLW Lake Pickwick Event!

FLW Press Release

and the rest of the Top 10 at arm's length.
(Photo: FLW)

FLORENCE, Ala. – It was the spot of a lifetime – a shallow ledge, plumb full of “hammers” – and Greg Hackney found it just 45 minutes into his first day of practice on Pickwick Lake.
For four days, Hackney pounded away on the spot to the tune of a 20-bass tournament total worth 97 pounds, 7 ounces. He caught a jaw-dropping day-two stringer of 31-6 to take over the tournament lead, then milked the bite through thunderstorms, gushing current and heavy spectator traffic over the weekend to make sure that he never relinquished it.
In today’s final round of the Walmart FLW Tour event presented by Straight Talk Wireless and hosted by the Florence/Lauderdale Tourism Bureau, Hackney pulled a 21-pound, 9-ounce limit off the school on his magic spot and locked up his first regular-season Tour victory, earning $100,000 and likely writing his ticket to this year’s Forrest Wood Cup.
The spot
Coming into Pickwick, Hackney figured two things. First, he needed to find something away from the crowds. Second, because of the late spring, there might still be some shad spawning, and the bass could be a little bit behind. He was spot-on with his predictions.
“My fish were pre- and postspawn,” Hackney says. “It took awhile for me to figure that out, but I think today I possibly caught some bedding fish up on top, staging kind of on the side. And I caught a lot of bucks.
“Everything is late,” he adds. “I knew there was no way they’ve had time to get finished spawning and look like that [with fat guts].”
Hackney located his tournament-winning spot early the first morning of practice. He was working around some shallow ledges that he’d been inspecting on his electronic map. When he dug in further, he found a ditch running up through the top of the ledge.
“There was a high spot with a small break, and it had a massive mussel bed up top,” he says. “The shell was on one side, but the other side was smooth. There was a ditch there, about 2 feet deep. When fish were staging, they were in that little depression [ditch] off to the side. It was real subtle.”
The spot was located on the backwater side of the main river, upstream from the bridge that carries the Natchez Trace Parkway across the Tennessee River.
“In practice, I was cranking up that ditch, and at the end of it was an ‘oil slick’ the size of my truck,” Hackney says. “I thought, ‘That can’t be what I think it is.’”
It was the telltale sign of a bunch of bait losing a battle to a bunch of jumbo predators – 6- and 7-pound largemouths and 4-pound smallmouths hammering away at gizzard shad that Hackney estimates were 10 to 12 inches long.

2014 Walmart FLW Tour Lake Pickwick Day 3: Greg Hackney Leads by 7 pounds!

Greg Hackney continues to dominate but Ehrler making a big charge.
by Curtis Niedermier
FLW Press Release
FLORENCE, Ala. - There was no 30-pound mega-limit weighed in today in Florence, Ala., but tournament leader Greg Hackney still hauled in a 22-pound, 4-ounce stringer from Pickwick Lake on a day that nine of the top 10 pros described as a grind.
Greg has a magic spot that is kicking out big bass. Today the
place didn't produce as well as the first two days.
(Photo: FLW)
Hackney’s three-day total is 75 pounds, 14 ounces, which extends his lead to 7-13 over California ace Brent Ehrler, who weighed an identical limit as Hackney’s today. Hackney will be boat No. 1 on the final day of this Walmart FLW Tour showdown, which is presented by Straight Talk Wireless.
Interestingly, the one piece of the puzzle that most anglers have been looking for this week is current, and today the Tennessee River was ripping in the wake of two afternoon thunderstorms that drenched the Tennessee Valley at the end of the workweek. Coupled with a water-level rise, the current turned out to be too much of a good thing, and Hackney’s magic 30-pound spot didn’t fire today like it did yesterday.
“There was a lot of current,” Hackney says. “You’d think that would have helped. Maybe I caught too many [yesterday]. It was OK today, but it took me all day to catch them.”
The Gonzales, La., pro revealed a few more details about his best spot today. It’s a 1 1/2-foot break topped with a “live” mussel shell bed. He knows it’s a live one because he’ll occasionally catch snails, and when he does, he knows he’s on the juice.
Mussel beds are nothing new to ledge fisherman on the Tennessee River, but this one has an extra ingredient that sweetens the deal for Pickwick’s biggest largemouths: giant gizzard shad. As in, gizzard shad so big that Hackney hasn’t even found a bait big enough to “match the hatch.” The 5-pound-plus “hammers” are choking down the jumbo baitfish whenever they slide up onto the structure. When it goes down, Hackney fires in with one of two unidentified lures, and the action is extremely fast.

2014 Walmart FLW Tour Lake Pickwick Day 2: Greg Hackney Attacks!

Big Sacks Push Leaders Away from the Pack.

by Curtis Niedermier
FLW Press Release
FLORENCE, Ala. – It was show time all day long for Gonzales, La., pro Greg Hackney. The former Forrest Wood Cup champ and FLW millionaire is dialed in on two pieces of structure that are holding schools of Pickwick Lake’s biggest brutes, and through a series of high-intensity flurries, primarily on his first spot, Hackney sacked up a limit of fish that pushed the scale to a staggering 31 pounds, 6 ounces. His two-day total is 53-10.
Hackney was tossing back 4-pounders – without even comparing them to the fish in his livewell – before he finally took his foot off the gas today. He now has a 6-pound, 1-ounce two-day lead at the Walmart FLW Tour’s fifth stop, which is presented by Straight Talk Wireless and hosted by the Florence/Lauderdale Tourism Bureau.
“I can’t even explain it,” says Hackney of his day today. “It started slow. I was catching little ones. When I started catching the big ones, they were way bigger than yesterday. When I caught 25 pounds, I thought, ‘I’ll just stay put and see if I can catch 30.’ And then they fired one more time.
Hackney hit magic and sacks a 31 pound plus limit to take the lead.
                                                                     (Photo: FLW)

“The only other time I’ve found a school better than that was at Falcon, when I set the three-day weight record,” adds Hackney, who set the record with 109-6 at the FLW Series East/West Fish-Off in 2008.
Hackney’s original goal this week was to lean on his schools as hard as he could for two days in order to earn as many Angler of the Year points as he could, in hopes of qualifying for the Forrest Wood Cup. He’s accomplished that goal today, and by leaving his school biting, it appears he’s going to have a strong shot at doing a lot more than just make up ground in the standings (he was 37th coming into this event).

2014 Walmart FLW Tour Lake Pickwick Day 1: Jeff Gustafson Grabs Lead with 10 Pounder Kicker!

Canadian angler take his first lead on the FLW Tour
by Curtis Niedermier
FLW Press Release
Last week he was catching 65-pound sturgeon in British Columbia. Today, he was hauling his personal best bass, a 10-pound, 12-ounce brute, over the gunwale on day one of the Walmart FLW Tour event on Pickwick Lake, which is presented by Straight Talk Wireless and hosted by the Florence/Lauderdale Tourism Bureau.
Such is the life for Jeff “Gussy” Gustafson, the second-year pro and popular Canadian outdoor television host from Keewatin, Ontario, who took the early lead on what began as a beautiful, mild morning in Florence, Ala., and ended with a thunderstorm that washed out weigh-in and sent nearly the entire crowd running for cover.
Gussy’s first-day total of 24 pounds, 8 ounces gives him a 15-ounce cushion over the hands-down favorite in this event, Randy Haynes.
As a well-traveled outdoorsman, Gussy has been exposed to some of the best fishing in North America, but he says today ranks right near the top of his greatest fishing experiences.
“I’ve been to Mexico five times, and I’ve never caught one over 10,” he says. “I was shaking like a leaf. When I caught it, I had pulled up to a spot and caught three 1 1/2-pounders in three casts. Then I fired back out there and it bit.
“I’ve never been in this position before,” Gussy adds. “It feels awesome. I picked the right day to catch the biggest bass of my life.”

2014 Bassmaster Classic Lake Guntersville Day 2: Evers by an Ounce!

By Deb Johnson
Bass Press Release
E2 pushes ahead by an single ounce.
(Photo: Darren Jacboson BASS)
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Just 1 ounce separated the two frontrunners Saturday in the GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by Diet Mountain Dew and GoPro, but it’s far from being a duel in Sunday’s finale, said the leader.
“It’s not just me and him,” said Edwin Evers, who replaced Randall Tharp in the catbird seat in the Lake Guntersville competition. “There’s a lot of anglers in this yet who can catch them. Thirty-pound bags are possible.”
After adding 20-9 Saturday, Evers of Talala, Okla., racked up a two-day total of 47 pounds, 6 ounces, enough to budge him out of second place. Tharp of Port St. Joe, Fla., weighed 19-13 Saturday for a running total of 47-5, 1 ounce shy of keeping his lead.
The Evers-Tharp place switch was just the beginning of Saturday’s leaderboard shuffle. Moving up into the Top 5 was Ott DeFoe of Knoxville, Tenn., up from 11th place into third with 43-5, about 4 pounds out of first place. Jason Christie of Park Hill, Okla., moved from seventh into fourth with 42-14.
The angler in fifth place leapt from 47th place to get there. Toting 32-3 to the scales — a one-day record for a five-bass-limit Classic — Paul Mueller of Naugatuck, Conn., amassed 41-13.
The field was cut to the Top 25 for the final push Sunday toward a first prize of $300,000 and the crown of the sport. The cutline fell at 34-2, the two-day weight posted by Keith Combs of Huntington, Texas.
Evers said he had just six bites Saturday.
“It was just a really hard day. I didn’t get the bites that I’d been getting, and the fish were not getting the bait. I lost a couple fish at the boat, about 4-pounders,” he said.
Evers, who like Tharp is seeking his first Classic crown, said conditions changed on Lake Guntersville from Friday to Saturday.
“The water definitely cleared up, and the water was quite a bit cooler this morning,” he said. “They just didn’t bite. I don’t know why.”
Still, 20-9 is good, he said.
“I’ll take it,” he said.
Sitting neck and neck is eerily similar to his FLW CUP
victory only months ago.

Tharp was disappointed in his Saturday bag.
“Any time I go out there and catch 19 pounds on this lake, it’s a failure for me,” said Tharp, a veteran of Guntersville tournaments during his many years living in northern Alabama before moving to Florida last July. “I had a couple ‘good’ fish today; yesterday I had four. I was in a good rhythm this morning, things were clicking — then I had some issues with my boat.
“I never found it (rhythm) after that. I culled one time this afternoon after three hours of fishing. I’m not disappointed in the time that I lost, I’m just disappointed I couldn’t get back into my rhythm.”

Several fan favourites flopped yet current FLW CUP Champ Randall Tharp, a former resident of northern Alabama, claims top spot with 27-08 pound bag. Fred Roumbanis claims the day's largest bass with 9.03lb beast.

Shimano's New Curado I Series of Casting Reels Sneak Peak

IRVINE, Calif. – For Immediate Release – February 5, 2014 – As interest and anticipation spreads on fishing web site forums and bulletin boards, not only coast-to-coast but also worldwide, Shimano confirms the impending introduction of an entire new series of Curado baitcasting reels, announces Bob Mahoney with Team Shimano. “We’ll unveil the new Curado I series reels officially on Friday, February 21 at the Classic Outdoor Expo in Birmingham, Alabama,” Mahoney said, “and on that same Friday, select tackle shops in both the U.S. and Canada will also have a limited supply of reels available.”

Shimano product development and sales staffers have been on a clandestine tour of key tackle dealers throughout the country since early January – with a special emphasis on shops focusing on bass fishing tackle. “Their interest in the new reels has been off-the-chart strong – and as much as we’ve tried to keep info on Curado under wraps until our official launch at the Bassmaster Classic,” Mahoney notes, “certain details about the new reels have filtered out – and of course, that has many anglers buzzing with interest.”

As anglers expect from Shimano, the new Curado reels will feature cutting-edge technology and features, “and we’ll look forward to showing it and telling you more for those attending the Classic Outdoor Expo – and on our web site, Facebook page and through select tackle dealers in a few weeks,” said Mahoney. “With our commitment to this somewhat legendary baitcasing reel series at Shimano, we can assure anglers that will definitely get more with the new Curado I series.”

2013 Walmart FLW Lewis Smith Lake Day 3: Ehrler Retains Lead for Third Day.

Keystone Light pro increase lead to 6-4 going into final day
09.Mar.2013 by Kyle Wood
FLW PRESS RELEASE
JASPER, Ala. – Today brought the weather that many anglers – especially largemouth guys – had hoped for with warmer temperatures to start the day and wind. Those factors still couldn’t seem to help the bite on Lewis Smith Lake which is beginning to show signs of fishing pressure getting the best of it. One man, however, still remains perched atop the leaderboard for the third straight day in a row.
Ehrler fishing deep for spots and the win.
(Photo: FLW)
Keystone Light pro Brent Ehrler has caught the largest bags from each day of competition during days one and two – 17 pounds, 8 ounces and 16-7, respectively. On day three his weight slipped some, but Ehrler still managed 11-15 to bring his overall weight to 45-14 and carries a 6-4 lead to the final day.
“I have caught heavier weights than I thought I could this week,” said Ehrler. “It hasn’t been easy at all this week – each day is truly a grind.”
Throughout the event Ehrler has been relying on a few key places that he found during practice. One of them has produced quality bites for him despite having never received a bite in practice from it. After yesterday though, Ehrler felt that he couldn’t rely as heavily on that area and knew he would have to make it happen from the other few places he had left. Most of the water he is focusing on is in around 30 to 40 feet, with his fish coming off the bottom or close to it - where he has been utilizing his electronics to see the fish that he often times will later catch.

Bassmaster Elite Dixie Duel Wheeler Lake day 1 and 2 recap

What's going on!?
By Luigi De Rose

Sorry for the delay but here is a photo essay on the Wheeler Lake Tournament. Wheeler Lake is the last official stop on the 2011 Bassmaster Tour Season. Many anglers are killing themselves to finish high enough in the points to qualify for the Classic. Others have no chance and are just trying to cut a good cheque. Also, there is the very important Angler of the Year (AOY) race in full swing.

So, lets try and figure out what is going on. Wheeler is a TVA lake in Alabama and has current flow created by electrical power generation. Bass mood is effected and affected by the current. The weather is hot and bass should be in a summer time pattern but don't count on it; it has been a weak spring.

Many expect the cranking anglers to win and they might. Summer means off-shore cranking, big worms, a few jigs and even a spoon tossed in. This means KVD should be at the top of the standings but he isn't in the Top 5 but who cares when it seems that he'll win another AOY.

Thursday, which was Day 1 saw Ott DeFoe take the lead and on Friday, David Walker is sitting atop the leader board. Both are considered new to BASS but both are very seasoned anglers with a lot of talent. Each one wants to fish the Classic and it looks like they will finish well.

This photo essay is courtesy of BASS photographers: Rob Russow, Seigo Saito, James Overstreet and Darrel Jacobson
Tim Horton and Kevn Wirth are sharing an off-shore spot. Sharing is the key work.

Horton battles a good one as Russ Lane watches.
