Providing bass anglers with both performance and value, G. Loomis launches a redesign to its popular E6X Series to make them more durable and even lighter. Available to anglers for the 2018 fishing season, the new E6X bass rods includes 33 models offered in both technique specific, along with G. Loomis’ universal ‘Mag Bass’ (MBR) casting and ‘Spin Jig’ (SJR) spinning actions.  

Built around a performance platform with a focus on weight, balance, sensitivity and action, “our E6X bass rods are the perfect choice for anglers who have never experienced what it’s like fishing a G. Loomis rod,” said G. Loomis senior planning manager - and noted bass angler - David Brinkerhoff. “And for those anglers who want to add specific actions to their rod arsenal - say a big swimbait rod or a dropshot spinning rod for some finesse fishing - the E6X series will have it covered.”

The slight weight reduction on rods was done while also increasing overall durability. “When you can go light and stronger, along with providing a smaller sized guide train for better balance, it was the right time for this nice upgrade to the E6X bass rods,” said Brinkerhoff. “Plus with the 14 spinning rods offered in the line-up, anglers will appreciate the added in-hand comfort from a more streamlined reel seat.”

At the recent 2016 ICAST SHOW a distinct booth, a distinctively orange booth seemed busier than most. The blazed orange of Carrot Stix rods gained constant attention throughout the show and warranted a closer look. Aware of success years back, I was curious of their new gear. 

In 2007, Carrot Stix launched their Carrot Orange rods and won an unprecedented 3 ICAST Best of Show categories. At the time, these rods were ground breaking with the introduction of Nano-technology, micro guides and feather light weight. Within a few years the rod company was in trouble then disappeared. In 2014, the company was bought and they were back into the fishing game.

Interested in more information, I sat down with Matt Ki, VP of Operations for Carrot Stix.

IBASSIN:

Hi Matt, thanks for taking the time to tell us more about Carrot Stix.

MATT:

No problem. The booth is a bit quieter now. Yeah, Carrot Stix has 6 lines of spinning and casting rods plus several saltwater and specialty rods along with our brand new 2 speed spinning reel and casting reel. We’re really excited about the 2 speed spinning reel. We’re getting a lot of positive feedback. 

IBASSIN:

Please tell me more about the company? Is it under new ownership?

MATT:

In 2014 it was bought and relaunched. We are steadily building back the business. The past owners left the company in bad shape.

IBASSIN:

Yeah, Carrot Stix was popular then it died out. What happened?

MATT:

The problem was poor warranties and customer service. The real problem was that the factory they used cheated. Instead of hand winding the guides they used a machine which probably wrapped too forcefully creating a weak spot on the blank. So, they shipped out a bad batch of rods without knowing the problem existed.  It seemed that all the rods were breaking between the 2^nd and 3^rd guide. Instead of honouring their products, they were worrying about all the money they were losing by replacing the broken rods. It tarnished the brand.

ICAST 2015 Best Rod Award: G. Loomis E6X Rods!

The new E6X rod series introduces anglers to what G. Loomis rod designers refer to a ‘swing-weight’, the proper rod balance needed when fishing ‘tip up’ techniques like pitching/flipping and casting tubes, jigs, soft plastic jerkbaits and drop shot rigs, and ‘tip down’ lures like crankbaits, spinnerbaits or swimbaits. “Proper balance lets anglers concentrate on what is happening on the end of the line, rather than the tip of the rod,” said G. Loomis’ Bruce Holt. “With the E6X series and the G. Loomis’ Multi-Taper Technology behind them, we can provide light, sensitive, yet powerful rods for all types of bass fishing techniques – what anglers know and come to expect form G. There are 12 E6X technique specific casting rods designed for jig & worm use, for flipping and punching, crankbait and spinnerbait specific, along with four technique specific spinning models for small jigs, tubes and worms, plus two drop shot spinning rods. Holt notes that both the casting and spinning jig & worm rods have the needed extra-fast tips, the crankbait rods have the needed slower, softer actions, while stiff, powerful actions are found on the flip/punch rods and unique actions are featured on the spinnerbait, swimbait and drop shot rods. The entire technique specific rods feature split grip handles with cork grips, along with Fuji reels seats and guides.

E6X 803C JWR -- Probably one of our best all-around bass rods, this 3-power beauty is extremely versatile.  While it's designed for casting jigs and worms, but if you're looking for just one rod to do a lot of different things, you can fish a spinnerbait or topwater with it as well.  At 6'8" it's a great rod for fishing in close quarters.  It has an extra-fast taper that provides excellent line and lure control, making it very accurate.  E6X makes it surprisingly powerful for a rod so light and you'll really appreciate the sensitivity.

E6X 852C JWR -- A light yet powerful 7'1" jig and worm rod designed for fishing smaller baits and lighter line in deep, clear lakes where the fish are a little more finnicky. Because of the lighter tip and the magnum butt-section it makes a great buzz bait rod.  It will cast an unweighted soft plastic jerkbait a country mile.  When the water is clear, the fish are spooky and you need to back off to be successful, this is the right rod!  E6X makes it light, sensitive and sneaky powerful.

E6X 853C JWR -- The do it all, medium-heavy casting rod designed to fish medium-sized soft plastics, soft-plastic jerkbaits, 1/4 to 1/2-ounce jigs and even big topwaters.  The extra length (7'1") increases tip-speed, which in turn, extends your casting range, helps you recover line quicker and is a big help with hooksets. A great alternative for fishing 4-5" hollow belly swimbaits., and also just a great all around casting rod.

E6X 854C JWR -- Our "power" pitching stick designed for fishing in and around brush, weeds and other heavy cover.  It will handle big jigs and big worms in areas where you need to move fish away from trouble in a hurry.  Excellent in deep-water applications where the extra length helps you move a lot of line with a swing of the rod tip.  Whether a big bucketmouth heads for a bush in 25-feet of water or a blow down on the bank, this rod will stop him... quickly!  E6X makes it light and sensitive - something you've come to expect from G. Shimano's New Curado I Series of Casting Reels Sneak Peak

IRVINE, Calif. – For Immediate Release – February 5, 2014 – As interest and anticipation spreads on fishing web site forums and bulletin boards, not only coast-to-coast but also worldwide, Shimano confirms the impending introduction of an entire new series of Curado baitcasting reels, announces Bob Mahoney with Team Shimano. “We’ll unveil the new Curado I series reels officially on Friday, February 21 at the Classic Outdoor Expo in Birmingham, Alabama,” Mahoney said, “and on that same Friday, select tackle shops in both the U.S. and Canada will also have a limited supply of reels available.”

  

Shimano product development and sales staffers have been on a clandestine tour of key tackle dealers throughout the country since early January – with a special emphasis on shops focusing on bass fishing tackle. “Their interest in the new reels has been off-the-chart strong – and as much as we’ve tried to keep info on Curado under wraps until our official launch at the Bassmaster Classic,” Mahoney notes, “certain details about the new reels have filtered out – and of course, that has many anglers buzzing with interest.”

Legendary HMG Gets A New Look

In 1973, Fenwick came out with the first-ever graphite rod, named the HMG (for High Modulus Graphite). Now 40 years later, Fenwick is giving a fresh new look to the rod that transformed the fishing industry and has caught countless fish through the years.

The new HMG combines the time-tested technology of a high-modulus blank with more modern innovations such as its comfortable, durable Fuji 5K reel seat, its strong yet smooth titanium guides, and Fenwick’s easy-grip, soft TAC material. The HMG also sports a newly designed Carbon Bound blank that incorporates carbon thread wrapped around the rod to strengthen the high modulus material while keeping weight to a minimum.
