Busy week and new tackle

It's been a busy week. Sorry for not getting the new info to you sooner but I've been writing article after article. So what is new? Considering the holidays are over and the weather is finally cold, a lot of bass fishing stuff is new.

Alabama Rigs
I also most had the new Guru's "Rig" in my hands. They just arrive Wednesday morning while I was shopping.  I wasn't going to be close to the office so I couldn't scoop up a few samples. Next week, I should have some time to pass by and get some. Expect some photos sometime midway through next week.

New Frogs
There are 2 new hollow body frogs for this year from Vok Fishing. The truly life like model is called a Croaker frog and the more traditional bait is called a Samrai Frog. Photo coming ASAP.

X-Rigs
I got a phone call early this week. The designer of the X-Rig scolded me for using such a poor picture of the rig. So, I have samples of a few sizes so expect some much higher quality photos of the X-Rig shortly.

Enjoy the weekend.

IBASSIN Exclusive: Fastach Creates it Own Jika Rig

Sizes range from 1/0 to 5/0
(Top to Bottom)
Fastach's new X Rig is the answer for all who were looking for a Jika Rig. This version uses the unique Fastach system which allows anglers to quickly slip on or off any size of weight. This rig substituted the welded O-ring with a small yet ultra strong swivel to provide a solid line tie and prevent line twist. Using custom VMC worm hooks, this X Rig is ideal for finesse all the way to heavy cover presentations.  Expect them in stores in 2012 at a very reasonable price.

IBASSIN's day on the water: Lake Z Saturday, Sept 17, 2011

By Luigi De Rose

Mid September is a tricky time of year to catch bass. They are in transition; forcing anglers to find them. Some lakes are still in summer mode, while others are in some phase of autumn.

This day on the lake will be a done through a photo essay. I cannot reveal the name of this lake. It is a true gem. Too much fishing pressure will kill it. It is well known lake which gets enough pressure from the odd tournament and local guys, I don't want to add a whole lot more. I spent the day with my wife and she was the videographer while I got to fish.
A few of you asked for more details on the fishing, particularly the baits and rigs. I will provide links to products to help you identify what I am using.

I went after smallmouth, after trying a row of docks near the launch. Water temp was 62.3 degrees F, so I expected the smallmouth to be on the hunt along shallower drops. When I fished this lake in mid August, I notice a water level drop of about 1 foot from my first trip to the lake in late June. Now the lake is at least triple that. I estimate, from the dangerously, shallow boat ramp and the exposed overhanging trees, that the lake is down almost 1 metre (3 feet).
This Rapala jerkbait is all the rage with my friends in northern Ontario. So, I tried to see how well it would work for me.

Rice Lake Report July 7, 2011

Spent the morning on famous Rice Lake, located just south of Peterborough, Ontario Canada. The blog is not easy to write because the fishing was the pits! Really, it was so slow. I did find out a few thing. One, the milfoil weed beds are thicker that I ever seen. The water is a horrible colour too. Rice is known for off-beat water especially during a bloom, but this was different. The water was a colour of a long espresso. Light brown near the surface and a dark, oblique a few feet down. The weeds seemed healthy; either a tan brown or lush green. So the fishing should have been good.

Water temp was 73 F is the morning and by noon hit 76. Spoke to a few cottagers who where in ear shot and they said it got cool last night. The first fish I caught was cold as ice. Strangely, the first 5 bites were all lost. They would hit the bait and then spit it like a flash.

The morning went like this:
7:21am
Launched out of Bewdley

7:30am
Hit my first stretch of bank. Missed a small bass on a Chatterbait and my dad missed it again with a flipping tube. Two hits and two outs.

8:13am

Lots of this stuff and more in the main lake! Yikes
Moved to next spot. Full of milfoil and looking good. Again, nothing for the longest time.
9:10 ish am
Hit the first bass. About 14" long and cold. Came from a weed mat that was blown in with last night's wind. Dad misses two in a row. A weakish hook set along with timid bites was giving my dad fits.

9:20 am
Whack a nice one. Came off a line of floating weed mat. Hit it with the flipping stick and a Reaction Sweet Beaver and it jumped and battled well. I was about to boat flip it and it came off. Again, another lost fish. Not going well.

The JIKA RIG. Japan's newest super rig

By Luigi De Rose

The Jika Rig is Japan's newest rig. It is so new that no one in North America has used it or even has it. It only came to light in the late last fall in Japan. A bit of a splash occurred at the Osaka fishing show but after the devastating Earthquake and Tsunami, fishing wasn't a top concern for many in Japan. Check out this video and see how you can make your own Jika rig and be the first on your lake to use it!
