2015 Bassmaster Elite St. Lawrence River Day 1: Florida Legend Take Lead with 22.15lbs!

The bass are biting for Elite anglers.
bass press release
WADDINGTON, N.Y. — On a Northern fishery known for producing monster smallmouth bass, three Florida largemouth gurus stole the show during the opening round of the Evan Williams Bourbon Bassmaster Elite at St. Lawrence River.
Shaw was one them in the rain and during the shine.
(Photo BASS)
Shaw Grigsby of Gainesville, Fla., caught five smallmouth that weighed 22 pounds, 15 ounces and grabbed the lead ahead of Lakeland, Fla., pro Bobby Lane (21-10) and a second Gainesville angler, Bernie Schultz (21-7).
Grigsby said he made a long run that was slowed some by shipping traffic. But once he arrived where he wanted to fish, he caught bass steadily — even when the heavy rains began.

Testa and Amoruso Win 2015 TOP BASS Sturgeon Lake!

Tight Race on Sturgeon Lake
By Luigi De Rose

Ready for a hot day. (Photo: Jeff English)
Under a foggy start, 87 teams tried their luck on Sturgeon Lake, one of the most difficult fisheries in the Kawartha region. Even under sultry heat, teams managed decent weights making the final weigh-in a nail biter. After the final limit hit the scales, the team of Fabio Testa and Guy Amoruso were declared the winners with a 17.67 lb limit beating Wayne Misselbrook and Rick Stockdale by only two ounces.  Guy and Fabio claimed $3600 for their win and the event paid down to 10th place. Big bass, a 5.99lb beauty was captured by the husband and wife team of the Verkruisens.

ICAST 2015 Best Rod Award: G. Loomis E6X Rods!

The new E6X rod series introduces anglers to what G. Loomis rod designers refer to a ‘swing-weight’, the proper rod balance needed when fishing ‘tip up’ techniques like pitching/flipping and casting tubes, jigs, soft plastic jerkbaits and drop shot rigs, and ‘tip down’ lures like crankbaits, spinnerbaits or swimbaits. “Proper balance lets anglers concentrate on what is happening on the end of the line, rather than the tip of the rod,” said G. Loomis’ Bruce Holt. “With the E6X series and the G. Loomis’ Multi-Taper Technology behind them, we can provide light, sensitive, yet powerful rods for all types of bass fishing techniques – what anglers know and come to expect form G. Loomis and all at a very comfortable price.”
There are 12 E6X technique specific casting rods designed for jig & worm use, for flipping and punching, crankbait and spinnerbait specific, along with four technique specific spinning models for small jigs, tubes and worms, plus two drop shot spinning rods. Holt notes that both the casting and spinning jig & worm rods have the needed extra-fast tips, the crankbait rods have the needed slower, softer actions, while stiff, powerful actions are found on the flip/punch rods and unique actions are featured on the spinnerbait, swimbait and drop shot rods. The entire technique specific rods feature split grip handles with cork grips, along with Fuji reels seats and guides.

ICAST 2015: Best Line Winner is Maxcuatro by PowerPro

Maxcuatro Wins Best New Line at ICAST 2015!
Increasingly, anglers are seeking specific fishing lines and other equipment to help ensure success in certain environments. The market for braided super-lines, like those made with Spectra fiber, continues to outpace the overall fishing-line market, growing 4 to 5 percent over the last five years compared to an overall market growth of 2 to 3 percent.

Avid and competitive anglers continue to trade up for braided lines with higher performance and value for use in both freshwater and saltwater environments.
Braided fishing lines made with Spectra HT offer anglers an additional competitive edge. Spectra HT is 25 percent stronger than equivalent-size competitive materials, enabling up to 30 percent thinner braided fishing lines so anglers can cast more easily, get more line onto their reel or use a lighter reel without sacrificing line strength or length. Fishing lines made with Spectra HT are also abrasion-resistant and less visible under water, so anglers can catch more fish.

“With the introduction of Spectra HT, Honeywell has set a new standard for strength in braided super-line material,” said Mark Saholsky, global business manager for Honeywell’s Advanced Fibers and Composites business. “Made from the same material that stops bullets and protects police officers and military personnel, Spectra HT provides higher strength than competitive fibers, enabling fishing-line manufacturers to develop new, thinner fishing-line products that provide features anglers want – additional reel capacity, improved casting and lower underwater visibility.”

ICAST 2015: Storm® Arashi® Top Walker

The Storm Arashi Top Walker features a responsive walking action that delivers a longer glide and powerful wake even in choppy water conditions. The low roll action keeps the hooks below the bait at all times as it walks to increase positive hook-up percentage. The triple rotated hook hangers nest the hooks close to the body for improved action and allow for larger size hooks. The multiple rattles deliver a cadence sound with variable pitch frequency mimicking schooling bait fish and are perfectly placed for long casts. Tie one on and get ready for some epic surface blow ups!

Shimano Australia opens state-of-the-art HQ

(originally posted in Angling International)
Tackle giant Shimano says that its new state-of-the-art headquarters in southern Sydney will allow it to significantly expand its operations in Australia.

The gigantic warehouse was officially opened last month and holds the full range of the Japanese group’s fishing tackle and bicycling parts. It features a high-tech automated material handling and logistics system – one of only five in operation in Australia –  which allows products to be sorted, packed and distributed to retailers quickly and efficiently.
Australian magazine, Fishing World was given a guided tour through Shimano’s product information facility where the latest fishing and cycle gear is on display. Ipads linked to the big screens allow visitors to the Shimano offices to browse through websites and videos detailing product information.

Speeches at the opening ceremony noted the vision and business acumen of Shimano Australia founder, John Dunphy, who passed away earlier this year. Industry leaders acknowledged that the new building is a lasting testament to Dunphy’s legacy as one of the founding fathers of the modern recreational fishing industry.

ICAST 2015: Storm® Arashi® Rattling Deep 18 & 25

These baits swim with limited side-to-side action and body roll to maximize diving depth and reduce angler fatigue when retrieving. Single cadence rattle for low frequency sound that penetrates further yet is not overpowering.

They are featured in five classic Rapala lure styles-the Original Floater, Shad Rap, DT Series, the Scatter Rap Minnow and the Scatter Rap Shad. They are available in natural forage patterns such as Live Pumpkinseed, Live Bluegill, Live Largemouth Bass, Live Smallmouth Bass, Live Pike, Live Walleye, Live River Shad, Live Smelt and Live Rainbow Trout. All made of balsa, hand tuned and tank tested. Better than a custom paint job at no extra charge!

ICAST 2015: Z-Man's HeroZ Jerkbait

“Z-Man’s new HeroZ are the most versatile saltwater jerkbaits I’ve ever fished,” states BigWater Adventures show host and Z-Man ambassador, Mark Davis. “They’re super durable, incredibly soft, and produce an undulating, darting action that’s limited only by the number of ways you choose to rig them. Whether fished on a jighead, rigged straight hooked, or nose hooked on a circle hook, HeroZ essentially arm me with three different baits. Better still, I’m constantly amazed when watching toothy fish after toothy fish chew on Z-Man’s ElaZtech baits, only to see them reeled in undamaged and ready for another cast!”

A full-bodied, eight-inch swimbait ideal for targeting larger salt- and freshwater gamefish, Mag SwimZ’ exclusive, curved paddle-tail design coupled with super-soft ElaZtech material provides an ultra-realistic swimming action and side-to-side wiggle on slow and fast retrieves alike. Just as impressive, their 10X Tough construction is able to withstand onslaughts from toothy predators like mackerel, barracuda, musky and pike. As with HeroZ, Mag SwimZ mate perfectly with 8/0 HeadlockZ HD jigheads, or can be rigged weedless thanks to a built-in hook slot.

“The new Z-Man Mag SwimZ are an example of the differentiating qualities, properties and advantages of ElaZtech,” comments Davis. “Their super long paddle-tail taper creates an action that can’t be duplicated by standard soft plastics. And, the bait actually swims rather than looking like it’s merely being pulled through the water,” he continues. “I’m confident the ‘fish list’ for this bait is going to be lengthy, as they’re likely to get eaten by anything I throw them at.”

ICAST 2015: HUMMINBIRD HELIX 7 SI GPS

One look at the HELIX™ 7 Series and there’s no mistaking its Humminbird DNA. Packed to the gills with technology, the HELIX 7 is easy to use, dependable under any circumstances and unbelievably clear, bright and fast—not to mention built right here in the United States. Experience jaw-dropping 800H x 480V resolution and 1500 nit brightness, delivering a clear and precise picture of fish and fish-holding structure. The ultra-wide 16:9 ratio gives you ample room to view two screens side-by-side, making fishing and navigating easier. The built-in quick-release gimbal mount makes angle adjustments and removal easy. No matter your target. No matter conditions. Game on.

ICAST 2015: Terminator® Walking Frog

Watch BASS Elite and Rapala Pro Angler, Ott DeFoe as he takes the Terminator Walking Frog out for a walk. It has the perfect walking action right out of the box-without modifications. The Walking Frog features the widest hook gap available created by the positioning of the rear weight. The rear weight also allows for longer and more accurate casts. The extra soft body compresses easily for increased hook-up percentage. This frog gets to & through the heaviest of cover.

ICAST 2015: Minn Kota Announces Low-Profile Eight-Foot Talon

The new eight-foot Talon has a lower profile than ever before because of its innovative three-stage design.
Talon’s patented sequential deployment system is quick, quiet and now – because of the eight-foot model’s three-stage design – measures only 41 inches in height at the transom, shorter than the previous two-stage model by 16 inches.
Like 12-foot and 10-foot Talons which deploy in three stages, the new eight-foot Talon is virtually silent, provides multiple anchoring modes, and performs in extreme freshwater or saltwater conditions. Two waterproof, floating remotes come standard to give you push-button control from anywhere on the boat.
Talon Group ImageAnchoring in hard bottom isn’t the same as anchoring into mud. With Talon, you can choose between three user-selectable anchoring modes to ensure the right hold and fast, easy anchor retraction. Auto-Drive Mode powers the spike into the bottom with three increasingly aggressive hits. Soft Bottom Mode is for less aggressive anchoring – and easier anchor retraction – in water with a muddy or silted bottom. Rough Water Mode is for heavy wind and chop; this mode performs three consecutive Auto-Drive sequences at 10-second intervals for a triple-strength hold.

ICAST 2015: HeadlockZ HD Jigheads

A winner of the Australian Fishing Tackle Association’s ‘Best Terminal Tackle’ Award, HeadlockZ HD jigheads are designed with a unique split grip keeper system that makes them easy to rig with ElaZtech soft plastics and locks all types of soft baits in place securely.  Thanks to their award-winning design, anglers can cast their lures hard, work their plastics aggressively, and keep fishing confidently without the need for constant re-rigging, even after hard strikes, knowing that soft baits are locked in position and swimming correctly.

HeadlockZ HD jigheads are built on extra heavy duty, chemically sharpened Mustad® UltraPoint® hooks and are available stateside in 3/0, 4/0, 6/0, and 8/0 hook sizes in weights ranging from 1/8 ounce to 3 ounces to cover a variety of fresh- and saltwater applications.  The smaller 3/0 and 4/0 sizes feature stronger hooks than other similarly sized jigheads, pair perfectly with a variety of three to five inch ElaZtech swimbaits, jerkbaits, and Scented BaitZ, and are ideally suited for both bass fishing and inshore saltwater fishing applications that call for extra-strong tackle.  The 6/0 and 8/0 versions match larger baits like the 6” SwimmerZ, 7” Scented Jerk ShadZ, 8” Mag SwimZ, and 10” HeroZ and are perfect for targeting bruisers like cobia, grouper, tarpon, jacks, striped bass, bluefish, tuna, and more using high-test braided superlines.

ICAST 2015: Bandit Makes No Mistake with "Mistake" Colours!

BANDIT LURES TO MAKE MORE MISTAKES IN 2016

3 New Dual-Look Cranks Now Available In 100, 200 and 300 Series

Bandit Lures made a huge impact on bass fishing with its “Mistake” color pattern that features a black back and vertical bars over a red base on one side and a chartreuse base on the other, and for 2016 anglers get three new “mistakes” from which to choose. New are the Crossbreed pattern, which pairs up the realistic Baby bass pattern on one side and the equally natural-looking River Bream on the other, Malfunction, which blends two productive crawfish patterns into one bait with Brown Craw Orange Belly on one side and Spring Craw on the other, and Mistaken Identity, which is possibly the craziest mash-up ever. This Bandit takes the vibrant Fire Tiger pattern and pairs it with the muted Root Beer pattern to create a head-turning combination for bass and other gamefish.

The original Mistake pattern wasn’t really a mistake and neither are these. The Mistake pattern was conceived and ordered by a tackle shop, and it was such a success that the company put it in its catalog lineup where it became one of Bandit’s best selling/most productive lures ever. The color pattern was designed to let anglers show bass two different looks without changing baits – a fish under a laydown sees the chartreuse side when the angler casts on the right side of the brush, and the red side when cast to the left side. The same logic applies to Bandit’s new dual-pattern baits.

The new Crossbreed, Malfunction and Mistaken Identity color patterns are available in Bandit 100, 200 and 300 series crankbaits. For more information go to www.banditlures.com.

ICAST 2015: SEAGUAR PARTNERS WITH DENNY BRAUER TO LAUNCH NEW FLIPPIN’ LINES

Seaguar®, the inventor and world leader in fluorocarbon and premium fishing line, has expanded its portfolio with the launch of two new technique-specific fishing lines targeting heavy cover applications.
Flippin’ Fluoro and Flippin’ Braid are the brainchild of Denny Brauer, legendary flipping expert and BassMaster Classic® Champion.
Brauer identified strength and sensitivity as the key characteristics required in the new Flippin’ lines. “This is about pulling big fish out of the nastiest vegetation you can find,” said Brauer. “You’re on a short line, and you need to feel the quick reaction strike and then literally horse the fish out of heavy cover.” He added, “Your line is one of the most important aspects of the presentation, and now Seaguar has made selecting the right line simple.

ICAST 2015: Minn Kota Announces EO - New Electric Outboard Motors

The new Minn Kota® EO is an electric outboard motor designed for use in both freshwater and saltwater. It is available in two models: EO ½ HP which is powered by a single 12V deep-cycle marine battery, and the EO 1 HPwhich is powered by a two-battery 24V system.
EO Half HPIn the past, recreational boaters relied on small gas outboards for pushing johnboats, canoes, kayaks, dinghies and tenders. These motors have the necessary power, but they’re expensive, noisy and not allowed on gas-restricted lakes.
For dependable, quiet and clean power, the innovative Minn Kota EO is engineered exclusively for outboard performance. The lower unit and all electronics have been built and tested to run hard at high speeds for extended periods of time without overheating. And Minn Kota engineers dialed in the design to make sure you get the most power and run time out of your motor. When starting the day with fully charged batteries, boaters will have up to nine hours of continuous run time at half speed. To ensure you make it back to the dock, the motor’s Push-to-Test Battery Meter gives you instant “state of charge.”
In addition to variable speed control, the Minn Kota EO features a 36-inch adjustable shaft, a Tilt/Extended Tiller and an adjustable clamp-on stow/deploy bracket. Manufacturer’s suggested retail price for the EO ½ HP is $799.99 and the EO 1 HP is $899.99. Shipping will begin in October 2015.

ICAST 2015: Minn Kota's New Riptide Ulterra Trolling Motor with Auto Stow-Deploy and Power Trim

Building off the overwhelming success of freshwater Ulterra, Minn Kota® now offers Riptide® Ulterra to saltwater anglers who demand excellence in boat control and corrosion resistance.
The revolutionary Riptide Ulterra bow-mount trolling motor features fully automated stow and deploy. In addition, Riptide Ulterra includes power trim, which raises and lowers the depth of the motor with the push of a button. These innovative functions, controlled wirelessly with the i-Pilot® remote, make boat control easier than ever.
“Riptide Ulterra will be a game-changer for saltwater anglers,” said Minn Kota Senior Product Manager Dave Maryanov. “They won’t have to get down from the tower or move to the bow to deploy and stow the motor, or adjust shaft length while fishing. Combine these key features with i-Pilot functionality like Spot-Lock anchoring and recording paths, and it’s clear this saltwater motor really does it all.”
Riptide Ulterra will be available fall 2015, with manufacturer’s suggested retail pricing between $1,969.99 and $2,479.99; models include 80-pound thrust with 54- or 60-inch shafts, and 112-pound thrust with 60- and 72-inch shafts. Riptide Ulterra will come standard with
i-Pilot GPS functionality.

ICAST 2015: Sufix Nanobraid™

Sufix Nanobraid™ is built with a wide angle braiding technology that creates higher tension on the braiding process resulting in a tight weave and super strong, silky smooth line. Abrasion resistant, extremely sensitive with superior knot and shock strength.

ICAST 2015: Z-Man's Brand New RaZor ShadZ™

In fresh or salt, fished as a bladed jig trailer or by itself, the RaZor ShadZ™ performs like no soft plastic baitfish imitation thanks to its realistic design and buoyant, 10X Tough ElaZtech construction.

Featuring a segmented, fish-shaped body and forked tail that create an extremely lifelike baitfish profile, the RaZor ShadZ pulls double duty as a first-of-its-kind floating/diving soft pastic jerkbait and the perfect bladed swim jig trailer to complement the new Project Z ChatterBait.  The combined softness, buoyancy, and extreme durability made possible by its ElaZtech construction allow it to perform above and beyond other soft plastics for both applications.

The RaZor ShadZ is the ideal bladed swim jig trailer when conditions call for a bulkier ChatterBait profile to mimic full-bodied forage like bream, shad and herring.  While other segmented swim jig trailers are notorious for ripping apart, Z-Man’s exclusive 10X Tough ElaZtech material allows for deep body cuts that cause the bait to move in a lifelike manner while still holding up to repeated strikes without tearing.  The RaZor ShadZ is sized to pair perfectly with the newly released Project Z ChatterBait, and its durable super-plastic construction and broad head allow it to stay put securely on the Project Z ChatterBait’s twin keeper barbs without sliding down throughout a day of hard casts, bass bites, and fish catches.

ICAST 2015: WEEGO Jump Starter Battery Pack

WEEGO JUMP STARTS MARINE MARKET WITH ULTIMATE ACCESSORY – THE PORTABLE JUMP STARTER BATTERY+
Weego, an innovator in portable battery solutions, recently launched its Weego Jump Starter Battery+ to the marine market. A compact and portable jump starter, the Jump Starter Battery+ eliminates the worry and fear of a dead battery, for as little as $99.00. Weego offers peace of mind, prevents ruined days on the water and pays for itself with just one use.
“Dead batteries at best ruin your day and at worst put you in a tight spot,” said Gerry Toscani, CEO, Weego. “Our small, high-powered Weego Jump Starters are perfect for boaters. And since lithium-ion batteries only lose about 2% of their power per month, you can throw it in a safety kit or locker and forget about it for about 12 months. They recharge in as little as 1.5 hours too!”
