Japanese baits have been prized possessions for decades. Finding an edge by purchasing unique or new baits is always wise. I recall how amazing effective the Lucky Craft 100 baits were when they first arrived; then came the Megabass Ito 110s. Scores of anglers shelled out big bucks to gain the edge. With the web and greater access to Japanese lures, the opportunities to find that magic bait or unseen colour pattern has become strained.

One easy fix is to focus on saltwater baits. Japanese anglers have more access to the salt then to fresh water, so a huge percentage of their tackle stores cater to these anglers. You'll be amazed by the selection and variety available.

One neat thing is the assortment of jerkbaits, vibration and wake baits that are bass size in length but very hefty. Aimed for launching off sea walls, they become a smallmouth bass angler's dream on the Great Lakes were wind is always a problem. An added bonus is that these saltwater approved lures tend to be built more rugged yet they still maintain the superb finishes you would expect from Japan. Usually, the range of patterns and finishes are more flamboyant than for bass, so you'll find some truly cool baits.

 Jig heads are also cheaper and superior. I stocked up when the Alabama rig craze hit and paid half of what I would have for specialty A-rig gear. Another benefit is that with metric sizing, anglers can really fine-tune jigs and hooks to create that something different local bass haven't seen. 

So, the next time you'll need to threat yourself to some shopping expand your search.

Deep diving jerkbaits are a must for late fall trophy smallmouth bass fishing. If you looking for these minnow baits, you might have to move pass the bass fishing section and over to the walleye one in the tackle store. Often, these deep diver plugs are considered walleye baits but they're lethal on trophy sized smallies. Don't expect them to glide and dance like short billed baits. These deep divers are ideal for more sluggish action as they remain deep.

Coolest Tackle Box Ever!

Once in a while you see something totally cool. At the recent Spring Fishing and Boat show in Toronto, I chatted with the gang at Megabass. Theo, the Canadian dealer for Megabass showed off the Asylum. The Asylum is one wickedly, majestic lure box with slide out spinnerbait slide tray. Only Yuki Ito could concock such a tackle storage system.

Enough storage for all your topwaters and cranks. 

Each have their own slot and the whole thing is vented.

Feathered Hooks for Jerkbaits

Last week, I explained how the feathered hook make all the difference on finicky smallmouth. I was planning on tying up a batch myself but didin't find the time. I popped by the local tackle shop and saw these hanging on the rack. Not having the time, patience or feathers I bought them. The Mustad treble has white with a hint of chartreuse. It also offered a red treble which was all the rage a few years back. The VMC came all white, red or in the VMC Sureset treble. I stuck to the standard treble in white. If you're as lazy as myself, stop by your local store and pick a few up.

IBASSIN in Japan: Sneak a look at the local tackle store!

Here is a semi-illegal video I took of a local tackle store here in Wakayama, Japan. I'm not sure if I was allowed to video but I did. They have so many nice baits. Have a look at the video and see for yourself. I'll be doing a return trip. I have been to a few other stores, one super big one but it was packed due to a sale and I didn't want to get the boot for pulling out the camera.
